You submitted your UK ETA application. Now you are waiting. Here is how to check where things stand.
Go to application.etauk.ae/visa/status/check. Enter your application reference number — it was included in the confirmation email sent after you paid. The page will show your payment status and the visa processing status for each applicant on the application. That is the fastest way to get an answer right now.
If you do not have your reference number handy, check your email inbox for a message from UK ETA for UAE Citizens. The subject line will include something like “application confirmation” or “reference number.” If you cannot find it, keep reading — there is a section below to help with that.
Where to Check Your UK ETA Status
The status check tool is at application.etauk.ae/visa/status/check.
Before you go there, have two things ready:
- Your application reference number — this was emailed to you after your application was submitted and payment was confirmed
- Access to the email address you used during the application — useful if you need to search for any follow-up messages
Once you enter your reference number and hit “Check Status,” the page will display two things: whether your payment went through, and the current processing status of each traveller included in the application.
If you applied for a family or group, each person’s status will show separately. Make sure you check every name on the application, not just the first one listed. For more on how family applications work, see our guide on UK ETA family and group applications for GCC travellers.

What the Status Labels Mean
This is where most people get confused. The system uses a few different status labels and it is not always obvious what they mean or what you are supposed to do next.
Here is a plain-language breakdown:
| Status | What It Means | What You Should Do |
|---|---|---|
| Approved | Your ETA has been granted. You can travel to the UK. | No action needed. Your ETA is linked to your passport digitally. |
| Pending / Under Review | Your application is still being processed. A decision has not been made yet. | Wait. Do not submit a new application while this one is open. |
| Refused | Your application was not approved. You cannot travel to the UK on this ETA. | Read the refusal reason. Consider your options before reapplying. |
| Payment Failed / Incomplete | Your payment did not go through successfully. Your application may not have been submitted. | Check your bank and resolve the payment issue. See the section on payment problems below. |
If your status shows “Pending” and your travel date is coming up soon, jump ahead to the section on what to do when time is running out.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Decision?
Most UK ETA applications are processed within 3 working days. In many cases, decisions come through faster than that — sometimes within hours of submission.
That said, processing times are not guaranteed. A few things can slow things down:
- High application volumes — peak travel periods mean more applications in the queue
- Additional checks — some applications require further review, especially if there are security questions or travel history issues
- Errors in the application — if there is a mismatch between your application details and your passport, the review may take longer or result in a refusal
The UK Home Office does not publish real-time processing data, so the honest answer is that most people hear back within a few working days, but some applications take longer.
If you need to understand processing timelines in more detail, our UK ETA processing time guide covers what to expect at different stages. There is also a dedicated page on same-day ETA processing if your trip is very close.
What If I Never Received a Confirmation Email?
This is one of the most common issues people run into. You applied, paid, and then… nothing arrived. Here is what to check:
Step 1: Check your spam or junk folder. Emails from travel authorisation services often get filtered automatically. Search your spam folder for “UK ETA,” “ETA application,” or “reference number.”
Step 2: Check the email address you used during the application. If you have more than one email account, make sure you are checking the right one. It is easy to apply with a work email and then check a personal inbox.
Step 3: Search for the sender. The confirmation email will come from the UK ETA for UAE Citizens system. Search your inbox for “etauk.ae” or “contact@etauk.ae” to find it.
Step 4: Wait up to 24 hours. Email delivery can sometimes be delayed. If you applied in the last few hours, give it a little more time before assuming something went wrong.
Step 5: Check if your payment went through. If no confirmation arrived, it is worth checking whether the payment was taken from your card or bank account. If it was not, your application may not have been submitted at all. Our guide on UK ETA payment failure solutions explains the common reasons this happens and how to fix them.
Step 6: Contact support. If you have checked everything above and still cannot find your reference number, contact UK ETA for UAE Citizens directly via the contact page or email contact@etauk.ae. Have your passport details ready so the team can look up your application.
What If My Application Is Still Pending and My Trip Is Soon?
How urgent this is depends on how much time you have. Here is a practical guide based on your travel date:
More than 2 weeks away You have time. Keep checking the status every day or two. Most applications are decided well before this window closes. There is no need to take any action right now — just monitor and wait.
5 to 14 days away Still within a normal processing window, but worth paying attention to. If the status has not changed after 5 or more working days, consider contacting support to check if there are any issues with your application. You can also look at whether urgent fast-track ETA processing is an option for your situation.
Less than 5 days away This is where things become time-sensitive. If your status is still pending this close to travel, contact support immediately. Do not wait. Do not submit a new application without speaking to someone first — having two open applications for the same person can complicate things. Visit our contact page or check the recent updates page for any system notices.
One important rule: never travel to the UK while your ETA is still in “Pending” status. You need an approved ETA before you board your flight. Airlines check this at check-in, and border control checks it on arrival.

I Got Approved — What Happens Next?
Good news. If your status shows “Approved,” you are cleared to travel to the UK.
Here is what most people do not realise: there is no physical document to print. The UK ETA is entirely digital. It is linked electronically to the passport number you used in your application. You do not receive a visa sticker, a letter, or a stamp. The approval lives in the system.
What this means at the airport:
- When you check in for your flight, the airline will verify your ETA electronically using your passport number
- At UK border control, your passport is scanned and the ETA is checked automatically
- You do not need to show any printed confirmation — but some travellers like to carry a screenshot of the approved status just in case
The one thing that matters: travel with the exact passport you used in your application. If you have renewed your passport since applying, your ETA is linked to the old passport number. You would need a new ETA for the new passport.
For a full walkthrough of what to do now that you are approved, see our guide on what to do after your UK ETA is approved.
Also worth noting: your ETA is valid for two years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. You can make multiple trips to the UK within that period without needing to reapply, as long as each stay is no longer than 6 months. Check the full details in our UK ETA validity and duration guide.
My Application Was Refused — What Are My Options?
A refusal is not the end of the road, but it does require some careful thought before you do anything.
First, read the reason for refusal. The notification you receive should include some explanation of why your application was not approved. Common reasons include:
- Errors or mismatches in the personal information submitted (name spelling, passport number, date of birth)
- Issues flagged in the security or immigration history section
- An expired or ineligible passport
If the refusal was due to a data error — something you entered incorrectly — you can reapply with the correct information. But do not rush into it. Take time to go through the common UK ETA application errors guide so you understand what went wrong and how to fix it before submitting again.
If the refusal relates to immigration history or security questions, reapplying immediately is unlikely to change the outcome. In those cases, a standard UK visitor visa may be the appropriate route instead. Our guide on UK ETA vs visa differences explains when a visa is the right option.
On refund policy: the UK ETA fee is generally non-refundable after submission, regardless of the outcome. Our refund policy guide explains the rules in detail.

A Note on Payment Status vs Visa Status
The status check page at application.etauk.ae/visa/status/check shows two separate things: your payment status and your visa processing status.
These are not the same thing. A confirmed payment does not mean an approved ETA. It means your application was successfully submitted and paid for — processing has begun. The visa processing status is what tells you whether a decision has been made.
If your payment status shows as failed or incomplete, your application may not have been received by the processing system at all. In that case, check our UK ETA payment methods guide and payment failure solutions before doing anything else.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I travel to the UK while my ETA is still being processed? No. You must have an approved ETA before you board your flight. Airlines check this at check-in, and boarding will be denied if no approved ETA is linked to your passport.
My name in the status check does not match my passport exactly. Is that a problem? It can be. If there is a significant mismatch between the name on your application and the name on your passport, this can cause problems at the border. Contact support as soon as possible. Do not wait until the airport.
I applied for my whole family. Do they each get a separate status? Yes. Each person on a group or family application has their own processing status. Check every name individually at application.etauk.ae/visa/status/check. One person may be approved while another is still pending. See our family group ETA guide for more.
My ETA was approved but I got a new passport since then. Is my ETA still valid? No. The ETA is linked to the specific passport number used during your application. If you renewed your passport, you need to apply for a new ETA using the new passport number before you travel. Visit our passport requirements guide for details.
How will I know when my ETA decision has been made? You should receive an email notification when a decision is reached. You can also check the status manually at any time using your reference number at application.etauk.ae/visa/status/check.
I am a UAE national — do I definitely need a UK ETA? Yes. As of January 2025, UAE passport holders need a UK ETA to travel to the United Kingdom, including for short visits, transit, and tourism. See our full UK ETA eligibility guide for UAE citizens for confirmation and details.
