Bahraini citizens do not need a UK visa for short visits. But since February 2024, you do need something before you travel: a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, or ETA.
Without it, airlines can refuse to board you and UK Border Force can turn you away at the port of entry. The UK ETA is not a visa, but it carries the same weight at the border. It is your pre-travel clearance, linked digitally to your passport.
This article covers every requirement in detail. Not just a list of documents, but what those documents actually need to look like, what catches people out, and what you can do to avoid a rejected application.
Who This Applies To
This guide is for Bahraini passport holders. If you hold a Bahraini passport and want to visit the UK for tourism, a business trip, a family stay, short study, or medical treatment, you need an ETA before you travel.
If you hold a different passport and live in Bahrain as a resident, this guide does not apply to you. Your ETA eligibility depends on your passport nationality, not your country of residence. Check the full eligibility guide to confirm your situation.
Bahrain was added to the UK ETA scheme on 1 February 2024, alongside the other Gulf region countries. This replaced the older Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) system that GCC nationals used to rely on.
The Core Documents You Need
There are four things you absolutely cannot proceed without.
1. A Valid Bahraini Passport
Your passport is the foundation of your ETA application. Without it, nothing else matters.
Here is what the UK system checks:
Validity: Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your trip. There is no hard rule about having six months of validity beyond your travel dates (unlike some visa programs), but you should not be travelling on a passport that expires during your stay or shortly after. If your passport expires in three months and you plan to stay for six weeks, that should be fine. But cutting it close is never a good idea.
Biometric chip: Your Bahraini passport must contain an electronic chip (it will have a small chip symbol on the cover). The UK ETA system reads your biometric data. Older non-biometric passports are not compatible.
No physical damage: A torn, water-damaged, or heavily worn passport can cause scanning problems. The machine-readable zone at the bottom of the photo page must be clear and fully legible. If border scanners cannot read it, you face delays or refusal.
One ETA per passport: Your ETA is attached to the specific passport number you use in the application. If you renew your passport after your ETA is approved, you will need to apply for a new ETA. You cannot transfer an ETA to a new passport.
If you are travelling with children, each child needs their own ETA, even if they are listed in your passport. The UK no longer accepts children listed in a parent’s passport for ETA purposes.
2. A Clear Facial Photo
The photo requirement trips up a lot of applicants. The UK ETA system uses automated facial recognition as part of its background checks. A blurry, shadowed, or poorly cropped photo can fail that check and lead to delays or rejection.
The exact photo specifications:
- Minimum size: 600 x 750 pixels
- Maximum file size: 10 MB (minimum 50 KB)
- Background: Plain white only. No patterns, shadows, or walls with texture behind you
- Face position: Your face must be centred, looking directly at the camera, and fully visible. No sunglasses, tinted lenses, or anything covering your face
- Head coverings: Allowed only for genuine religious reasons, but your full face from chin to forehead must be visible
- Lighting: Evenly lit. No shadows across your face or forehead. No bright light creating glare
- Expression: Neutral. Mouth closed. Eyes open
A smartphone photo taken in good natural light against a white wall can work, but many people get this wrong. If you are unsure, use a passport photo service that understands UK government standards.
Do not reuse a passport photo from an old document. The system checks for recency and quality. Take a fresh one.
3. A Working Email Address
This sounds obvious, but it is worth being specific about.
Your ETA decision is delivered by email. Once approved, you receive a confirmation that your ETA is linked to your passport. You should keep that email. Most airlines and some border officers will ask to see it.
Use an email account you actively monitor. Do not use a shared or old account that you rarely check. If the confirmation goes to spam or a forgotten inbox, you may not realise your ETA was approved or that there is an issue requiring action.
4. A Payment Method
You cannot submit an ETA application without paying the processing fee first. The accepted payment methods through UK ETA for GCC Citizens are:
- Credit card
- Debit card
- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
Prepare your card before you start the form. The payment happens at the end of the application, and the session can time out if you step away mid-process.

The Application Form Itself: What You Will Be Asked
Beyond the documents, the application asks you a set of personal and background questions. You need to answer all of them accurately.
Personal details: Full name exactly as it appears on your passport. Date of birth. Nationality. Do not abbreviate or use nicknames. Everything must match your passport character for character.
Passport details: Passport number, issue date, expiry date, and issuing country. Double-check these manually. A single digit wrong in your passport number means your ETA is attached to a non-existent document.
Contact information: Your email address and a phone number. The phone number is not verified but should be accurate in case a follow-up is needed.
Travel plans: You will be asked about your intended purpose of travel. The main categories are tourism and visiting family, business or academic visits, short-term study, medical treatment, transit through the UK, and marriage or civil partnership. Select the one that matches your actual reason for travel. Be honest. Claiming tourism when you plan to work is grounds for refusal and potentially a ban.
Background questions: These cover criminal history, previous immigration refusals, and travel to restricted countries. You must answer them truthfully. The UK conducts background checks on all ETA applicants. If you have had a previous UK visa rejection or ETA refusal, disclose it. Hiding it and having it discovered is far worse than declaring it upfront.
Passport Photo Versus Facial Photo: What Is Different
One point of confusion worth clearing up. Your ETA application asks you to upload a facial photo of yourself, not a scan of your passport photo page.
You upload two things:
- A photo of your face (the selfie-style image described above)
- Your passport biographical data page (the page with your photo, name, and passport number)
For the passport page scan: lay your passport flat under good lighting. Make sure all four corners of the page are visible. The text must be sharp and readable. No fingers covering the machine-readable zone at the bottom. The image should not be blurry or skewed.
What Happens After You Apply
Most ETA decisions for Bahraini citizens come through within a few hours. In some cases it takes up to three working days, usually when additional background checks are triggered.
You can track your application using the visa status check tool. That tool shows two separate data points: your payment status and your visa processing status. If your payment is confirmed but the processing status shows pending, your application is still being reviewed. Both need to show complete before you travel.
If you receive a decision and something looks wrong, or if you spot an error in your application after submitting, contact the support team quickly. Corrections are possible before processing is finalised. After that, you may need to reapply.
Common Mistakes That Lead to Rejection
These come up repeatedly and are entirely avoidable.
Name mismatch: Entering your name as it appears on other documents rather than your passport. If your passport says Mohamed Abdulla Al-Khalifa, that is what goes in the form, not a shortened version.
Wrong passport number: One transposed digit creates a mismatch the system flags immediately. Read the number from your physical passport, not from memory.
Expired passport: Some people apply using a passport that will expire before or during their trip. The application may go through, but you will be turned away at the border.
Unclear photo: Any shadow, colour background, or obscured facial feature can fail the automated check.
Incorrect travel purpose: Selecting the wrong category for your visit type can lead to a refusal. If you are visiting for business meetings, do not put tourism. If you are attending a short course, use short-term study.
Not applying early enough: The ETA usually processes fast, but not always. If you apply the night before your flight and a manual check is triggered, you are not travelling.
For a full breakdown of what goes wrong and how to fix it, the UK ETA application errors guide covers these in more detail.
If Your ETA Gets Refused
A refusal is not the end of the road. You can apply again. The UK ETA system allows reapplication after rejection. But before you do, you need to understand what caused the refusal, otherwise the second application will have the same problem.
Common reasons for refusal include outstanding background checks, incomplete or inconsistent information, and document quality issues. The reapplication guide walks through how to approach a second application correctly.
How Long the ETA Lasts
Once approved, your ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During that period, you can make as many trips to the UK as you want. Each visit can be up to six months.
The ETA cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer than six months, you need a full visa, not an ETA. And if your passport is renewed during that two-year window, you need a new ETA regardless of how much time is left on the old one.
Travelling With Your Family
Every member of your group needs their own ETA. There are no family ETAs or group authorisations. This includes infants, toddlers, and children of any age. If your child has their own Bahraini passport, they need their own application with their own photo and their own payment.
For tips on managing applications for multiple people at once, the family and group application guide is a useful reference, written for UAE families but the process is identical for Bahraini applicants.
How This Compares to Other GCC Nationals
Bahraini citizens are in the same position as all other GCC nationals. The ETA process, requirements, and validity are identical whether you hold a Bahraini, Saudi, Emirati, Kuwaiti, Omani, or Qatari passport.
The only difference is the date the scheme opened. Qatar was first, in November 2023. The rest of the GCC, including Bahrain, followed on 1 February 2024.
You can compare how the requirements look for other GCC nationalities here:
- UK ETA eligibility for Saudi citizens
- UK ETA for Emirati citizens
- UK ETA eligibility for Kuwaiti citizens
- UK ETA requirements for Qatari citizens
- UK ETA for Omani citizens
Quick Reference Checklist
Before you start your application, confirm you have:
- A valid Bahraini biometric passport (not damaged, not about to expire mid-trip)
- A fresh facial photo meeting UK specifications (white background, 600x750px minimum, under 10MB)
- A clear scan of your passport photo page
- An active email address you check regularly
- A working payment method (credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay)
- Accurate personal details matching your passport exactly
- Honest answers to all background questions
If you have all of that ready, the application itself takes around ten to fifteen minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Bahraini citizens need a visa to visit the UK?
No, not for short visits. Bahraini passport holders can visit the UK for up to six months without a full visa. But since February 2024, they do need a UK ETA before travelling.
What documents do Bahraini citizens need for a UK ETA?
A valid biometric Bahraini passport, a facial photo meeting UK photo standards, a scan of your passport photo page, a working email address, and a payment card.
How long does it take to get the UK ETA approved?
Most applications are processed within a few hours. Some take up to three working days if additional checks are needed.
Can I use the same ETA if I renew my passport?
No. Your ETA is tied to the specific passport number used in the application. If your passport changes, you need a new ETA.
What if my photo is rejected?
The system will flag it. You will need to upload a compliant photo. Make sure the background is white, your face is centred and fully lit, and the file meets the size requirements.
Can children travel with a parent’s ETA?
No. Every traveller needs their own individual ETA, including children of any age.
What can I do if my ETA application is refused?
You can apply again. Read the refusal reason carefully, fix the issue, and resubmit. See the reapplication guide for details.
Where can I check my application status?
Use the visa status check tool. It shows both your payment status and your ETA processing status separately.
Is the UK ETA the same for all GCC nationals?
Yes. The requirements, process, and validity are the same for Bahraini, Saudi, Emirati, Kuwaiti, Omani, and Qatari passport holders. See the Gulf region eligibility page for details on all six nationalities.
What if I have a previous visa refusal?
Disclose it in the application. The UK checks immigration history. Hiding a prior refusal and having it discovered during checks creates a bigger problem than declaring it upfront.
